the 65,000 service members who CAN'T
!

Meet the LGBT veterans who proudly served our nation, and who are now Out and Proud.
anonymous veterans are placed in order simply for ease of organization. We will be adding continually as more registries come in, and National Veterans Coming Out lists come in from AVER's 24 local chapters.

Out & Proud LGBT Veterans | Coming Out: 10=great / 1=bad
Mr. Sean Kelly - Arizona - Gay
USRA - Apr 1997-Apr 2003 - E4
self-identified in service: Yes
Coming Out: 10
honors & citations:
Army Acheivement Medal, Good Conduct

Bio: I was open about my sexuality and was helpful to many men who were unclear about Gays or their own identity after I completed Basic Training. One particular time, included three soldiers directly asking about my manerism. I was truthful and they proceeded to harrass another soldier that lied in fear. I guess sometimes, people respond better to honesty than being lied to.

There were so many questions and misconceptions which were broken down during my career in the Army. (from Straights, as well as Gays)

I received letters from soldiers who were afraid to come out during Basic and AIT, but were proud to see that we existed in the service. Many of whom, never had a gay friend or ran away from broken homes. I was a Den Mother to my gay pals and am proud to help lost souls connect and grow while I was in. So many of us were lost in the whole gay issues, that we almost forgot we are normal humans. Some hid under the uniform to deny our beings. Others, slowly came out and embraced the life. I served my Country and made lifelong friends in the process too.

Ms. Sandi Kissane - Maryland - Lesbian
USAF - Sep 16 1985-Oct 1 2005 - E7
self-identified in service: Yes
Out since: Aug 2005 - Coming Out: 10
honors & citations:
NCO of the Year 2000 for my career field; 2 MSM; 4 AFCM; 1 Achievement; 9 Outstanding Units

Bio: I spent 20 years in the closet and as the my retirement drew nearer I had this overwhelming feeling of being completely fragmented. I had worked so hard to keep my professional life separate from my personal life -- it was like existing on two separate planes. I didn't have the energy to do that anymore. Since I've been out, I've discovered so much about myself and feel more whole than I can ever remember feeling. I've been putting the pieces back where they belong and in doing so I've come to appreciate myself. I have a greater capacity to love myself (and others) in being able to accept and recognize my value as a strong veteran lesbian!
